Youth and Volunteer Centre of Red Deer
RICHARDSON AND SONS DONATION

Heather Gardiner, Executive Director of the United Way of Central Alberta presents a $2,000 donation from James Richardson & Sons Limited to David Murphy, Executive Director of the Big Brothers Big Sisters of Red Deer & District at the Kick Off United Way Luncheon Campaign 2008. at the Red Deer Lodge.
Big Brothers Big Sisters is a program which matches children typically 5-15 years of age to caring volunteers within the community. Interested volunteers can become involved in Bigs in a variety of ways. Staff provide on-going follow-up and support in all areas.
- TRADITIONAL MATCHES
- Big Brother: We match a male volunteer with a male child/youth taking care to ensure they have similar interests. Matches spend one-on-one time together doing things that friends do... like talking, playing ball in the park, watching a movie or just hanging out. You don't have to change your life to become a Big Brother... having a Little Brother just means you have someone else to share your life.
- Big Sister: A female volunteer is matched with either a female or male child (choice is up to the volunteer and child) in a one-to-one friendship. After the match is made, you get down to creating a true friendship that will benefit a child... but you'll also be surprised about how the friendship will make you feel great too.
- IN-SCHOOL MENTORING PROGRAM
It's not about homework! This is a program that takes place at the child's school, during the school year. You spend one hour per week doing a fun activity or just talking with a child who could use a friend. We encourage employers to give employees the time during the work day to volunteer... studies show that people who volunteer perform better on the job.
Employers can also become involved in this program by allowing staff 1 hour of paid time per week to mentor a child in a school setting. This is a great way to get your company and employee team actively involved in the community, and to raise your company's profile through those efforts. There are numerous businesses supporting this program. CLICK HERE for more information on our In School Mentoring Program.
- COUPLES FOR KIDS
Volunteer with your partner or spouse and be matched to a Little Brother or Little Sister. This is a great way for both of you to give the gift of friendship to a child.
- COPS FOR KIDS
Police officers volunteer their time monthly in a variety of activities with children from the Big Brothers Big Sisters waiting list.
